Grayton Beach State Park Guide: Beach, Parking, Camping & Trails

Grayton Beach State Park combines a Gulf beach with coastal dune-lake scenery, trails, and overnight accommodation along South Walton’s 30A corridor. It is a useful choice when you want to spend time in a protected landscape rather than build the whole day around a beach-town shopping district.

The park’s notice effective October 12, 2026, announces day-use reopening, with overnight accommodations remaining closed following the storm. Older pages still show full-closure notices. Confirm current access before traveling; normal camping and cabin information below does not mean those facilities have reopened.

Quick Answer: Why Visit Grayton Beach State Park?

Choose Grayton for a beach day with the option to paddle Western Lake or walk through coastal habitats. The park is distinct from the nearby Grayton Beach village and its public beach access. Enter the state park when you want its day-use facilities and trails.

Our Florida beach guide gives the statewide comparison. Within the Panhandle, Grayton’s dune-lake setting is the main reason to choose it over a beach-only stop. Use our Florida beaches map to place it along the coast.

Entrance, Parking, Hours, and Fees

The main address is 357 Main Park Road, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459. Use the state park entrance as your navigation destination. A result for Grayton Beach village, a restaurant, or a county beach access can send you somewhere else.

Normal day-use hours are 8 a.m. to sunset. The listed entry charges are $5 for a vehicle with two to eight people, $4 for a single-occupant vehicle, and $2 for pedestrians or bicyclists. Temporary storm restrictions take precedence over the normal schedule.

The park warns that it can reach capacity and stop admitting day visitors, including pedestrians and bicyclists, for several hours. Arriving without a car is therefore not a guaranteed way around a capacity closure. Keep a flexible plan instead of promising your group a specific late-morning arrival.

Use the official Grayton Beach State Park page for current alerts and the hours and fees page for admission and overnight rates. Park staff can be reached at 850-267-8300.

What Is the Beach Like?

The park protects about a mile of white-sand Gulf shoreline. The dunes are part of the landscape, not a shortcut between your parking space and the water. Follow the designated route and keep equipment outside protected areas.

For a simple visit, spend the first part of the day on the sand and leave the trail or lake for later. That makes it easier to adjust if conditions change without feeling that you have missed the only reason to come.

There are no lifeguards. Follow warning flags and posted restrictions, and judge swimming separately from how attractive the water looks. The lake should not be treated as an automatic swimming substitute when Gulf conditions are poor.

Grayton belongs in the state’s white-sand conversation, but water color and clarity vary. Compare the setting with other destinations in our Florida white sand beach guide.

Western Lake: A Different Side of the Park

Western Lake is a coastal dune lake behind the beach. Exploring this inland water landscape is a different outing from paddling into the Gulf, so choose your launch and intended route before carrying equipment from the car.

The park identifies a boat ramp for lake access and lists canoe and kayak rentals through its supporting friends group. Call for current availability and rates, particularly during recovery or other service disruptions. A general rental listing is not a reservation.

Read the park’s Western Lake paddling information before deciding whether to bring your own craft. Wind and weather still matter on a lake; avoid assuming that inland water is always an easier option for your group.

If you prefer to stay on land, make the lake scenery part of a trail visit. You do not need to add a paid activity to appreciate the contrast between the beach, dunes, and wooded areas.

Nature Walks and Longer Hiking or Cycling

The short nature trail starts near the beach parking area and gives a different perspective from the shoreline. It passes through coastal habitats, making it a sensible addition to a beach day when you want a modest walk.

The longer hiking and biking routes north of 30A require more deliberate planning. Look at the park map and the Western Lake Loop information before setting out. Do not confuse a one-way trail distance with the total distance back to your car.

Pack footwear suitable for a trail, water, and sun protection. Ask which paths are open after a storm and choose a route that fits the time remaining before the day-use gate closes. A short loop near the beach is often enough for a mixed beach-and-walk outing.

Camping and Cabins: Plan for Reopening, Not Immediate Availability

Overnight accommodation was still listed as closed in the October 12 notice. Anyone with an affected booking should follow the reservation team’s instructions. Do not interpret an ordinary fee table as confirmation that a stay can go ahead.

Under normal operations, the campground accommodates tents and RVs, while the cabin area offers a different type of stay. The listed campground base rate is $30 per night plus tax and a $6.70 reservation fee; RV stays also have a $7 nightly utility charge.

Cabin rates vary by season. Compare the full reservation total and the facilities of the specific unit instead of selecting solely on a headline nightly price. The cabin section has its own access arrangements, so it is not interchangeable with the day-use beach entrance.

For future planning, decide whether you want camping equipment and outdoor living or an indoor base. Either can make more sense than a long same-day drive, but only after reopening and reservation availability are confirmed.

Facilities, Accessibility, and Dogs

The day-use area includes restrooms and picnic facilities. The park lists Mobi-Mats and a beach wheelchair, along with accessible picnic and overnight facilities. Arrange wheelchair use with staff ahead of time and ask which access features are currently available.

Pets may use designated areas under the park’s leash rules, but they are not permitted on the beach or in cabins. A dog-friendly campsite does not mean a dog-friendly swimming beach. Review the park’s amenities and pet information when planning the whole group’s visit.

How to Spend a Day at Grayton

Beach-focused visit: arrive early, confirm the day’s access notices, and choose your place on the sand. Add a picnic and a short nature walk if conditions and energy allow.

Paddling-focused visit: confirm the launch and rental arrangements first. Build the schedule around weather, equipment return, and the route you can comfortably complete, then add beach time afterward.

Visit with children: keep the activity list short and leave time for carrying gear, changing clothes, and breaks. A beach, picnic, and short walk can be a fuller day than it appears on paper.

Grayton Beach State Park FAQs

Is the state park the same as Grayton Beach village?

No. They are neighboring places with different entrances, parking arrangements, and facilities. Select the state park’s Main Park Road address for this visit.

Can a bicycle get you into a full park?

Not necessarily. The park’s capacity notice explicitly includes day visitors arriving on foot or by bicycle.

Can you use the cabin beach without a cabin booking?

Do not assume so. Follow the park map and guest-only signs; day visitors should use the designated day-use area.

Final Thoughts

Grayton is especially appealing when the dune lake and trails matter as much as the beach. For a near-term visit, confirm the latest storm-recovery status first, then choose a simple day-use plan that matches the facilities actually open.
