Caladesi Island State Park

Caladesi Island State Park Guide: Ferry, Beach, Kayaking & Tips

Caladesi Island State Park is a beach outing that starts with an access decision: take the passenger ferry from Honeymoon Island, arrive by private boat, or plan an appropriate paddling trip. There is no public road that lets you drive onto Caladesi and park beside the beach.

The reward is a Gulf shoreline with trails and mangrove scenery. The tradeoff is that return transport, what you carry, and current marina conditions matter more than they do at a mainland beach.

Quick Answer: Is Caladesi Island Worth the Extra Effort?

Caladesi is a strong choice when you want a beach visit with a boat journey, natural shoreline, and optional walking or paddling. It is less convenient if you need unrestricted time, frequent trips to the car, or a wagon full of beach equipment.

For a first visit without your own boat, the ferry from Honeymoon Island is the straightforward plan. Compare Caladesi with mainland options in our Florida sand beaches guide before deciding whether the extra transport fits your day.

Where to Park and How the Ferry Works

Drive to Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin, enter the park, and follow signs for the Caladesi ferry ticket office and docks. Your car remains at Honeymoon Island.

The operator currently sells tickets at the ticket office, not online. Published departures start at 10 a.m., with hourly service and additional half-hour departures during specified seasonal and weekend periods. Service is weather-dependent and does not operate on Thanksgiving or Christmas.

The ticket allows up to four hours on the island, depending on purchase time. Confirm your assigned return and the day’s final sailing with staff; do not assume a late arrival still gives four full hours.

Beach carts and wagons are not permitted aboard. Strollers, walkers, and wheelchairs are permitted, along with items such as chairs, umbrellas, and coolers that you can carry. Review the ferry operator’s current schedule and baggage rules before packing.

Caladesi Ferry Costs and Park Admission

Charge Listed price Applies to
Adult round-trip ferry $20 Each adult passenger
Child round-trip ferry $10 Ages 6–12
Young child ferry Free Ages 5 and younger
Honeymoon Island vehicle entry $8 Vehicle with 2–8 occupants
Honeymoon Island single-occupant vehicle $4 One visitor arriving by car
Caladesi private-boat admission $6 Boat with up to 8 people; extra passengers cost more
Caladesi kayak admission $2 Per kayaker

Two adults arriving together by car would budget $48 for the listed ferry fares and Honeymoon Island vehicle entry, before food or rentals. Two adults and two children ages 6–12 would budget $68 on the same basis.

The private-boat and kayak charges describe other arrival methods; they should not be added as a private-vessel charge to a ferry passenger’s budget. The park’s official fee page sets out the separate categories.

From the Ferry Dock to the Beach

The ferry brings you to the bayside marina. From there, follow the park’s paths and boardwalks to the Gulf beach. Leave time for this walk, bathroom stops, and finding a place to settle rather than counting every minute of your island stay as time on the sand.

Caladesi has restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic facilities, and concession services. However, the current park notice warns that food service may be limited. Bring water and enough food for your party instead of making lunch entirely dependent on the café.

The park lists accessible ferry service, elevated boardwalks, and beach wheelchairs. Confirm boarding arrangements and equipment availability in advance if they are essential to your visit. Getting onto the island and moving across loose beach sand are separate accessibility questions.

What to Do on Caladesi Island

Spend time on the Gulf beach

Walking, relaxing, and swimming in designated areas are the simplest reasons to visit. Follow the day’s warning signs and do not infer water safety from a calm-looking photograph. Leave plenty of time for the walk back to the dock.

Look for shells without disturbing living animals

Shelling is a popular activity, especially when the tide exposes more shoreline. Live shelling is prohibited. If a shell has an animal inside, leave it where it belongs; finding something interesting does not mean it should go home in your bag.

Add a nature walk

The park has Beach Loop and Hammock Loop trails through different habitats. Some terrain is sandy even where the route is mostly flat. Choose a walk that fits your ferry return instead of starting a longer route simply because there is still daylight.

The park activities and amenities page is useful for deciding which part of the island to explore. For a short ferry visit, I would choose the beach plus one other activity rather than trying to fit in every option.

Kayaking: Separate the Crossing From the Mangrove Trail

Paddling to Caladesi from outside the park and paddling its mangrove trail are different undertakings. A sheltered-looking section of mangroves does not describe the conditions on an exposed crossing to reach the island.

The park’s mangrove paddling route begins and ends around the marina and café area. Low tides can restrict parts of the route. Consult the official Caladesi paddling guidance and an appropriate local outfitter before choosing equipment and timing.

If you arrive by ferry and want to rent a kayak, confirm availability and the realistic time needed before committing. Rental return, beach time, and your ferry departure all have to fit into the same island visit.

Private Boats, Marina Restrictions, and Camping

As of the official September 29, 2026 notice, marina access is day-use only and overnight marina accommodation is unavailable. The south side of A Dock and B and C docks are listed open; D Dock remains under construction. Power and water are available on the permitted docks, with a listed $7 utility fee per vessel in addition to entrance charges.

This dated restriction takes priority over general pages describing boat camping. Do not book a trip around overnight docking until the park confirms it has resumed. See the current Caladesi visitor notice for changes.

Caladesi’s overnight offering concerns boat accommodation; it is not a conventional car-accessible tent or RV campground. A ferry ticket does not give permission to camp on the beach.

A Practical Ferry-Day Plan

Arrive at Honeymoon Island with time for entry, parking, ticket purchase, and boarding. Carry a manageable beach bag, drinking water, food, towels, sun protection, and a dry place for your phone.

Once on Caladesi, confirm the return plan, locate facilities, and choose your main activity. A beach walk and picnic provide a simple visit. A kayak rental or longer nature walk requires a more deliberate schedule.

Begin returning to the dock before the last possible moment. Trying to squeeze in one more swim is not worth missing your assigned transport. If weather affects ferry service before you leave Honeymoon Island, ask staff about the options rather than attempting an improvised crossing.

For the regional context, Caladesi sits in the Dunedin/Clearwater part of Florida’s Gulf Coast. Our white sand beaches in Florida guide helps compare it with other beach settings.

Caladesi Island FAQs

Can you bring a dog on the ferry?

Pets are not allowed on the ferry or on Caladesi’s beach. Private-boat arrival does not remove the beach restriction. Contact the operator separately about service-animal arrangements if relevant.

Can you walk from Clearwater Beach?

Some guides describe a long shoreline approach from the south when the coastal connection is passable. Do not treat that as a guaranteed short route or a substitute for current access advice. Ask the park about conditions and permissions before attempting it; the ferry remains the clearer first-visit plan.

Is Caladesi better than Honeymoon Island for a short visit?

Caladesi adds a boat journey and more transport planning. Honeymoon Island avoids the ferry portion. If time, gear, or flexibility is the deciding factor, consider staying at Honeymoon rather than rushing both.

Final Thoughts

Caladesi works best when you plan around the ferry or boat first and the activities second. Pack lightly, confirm the return, and treat the current marina notice as more important than an older description of overnight stays.
